(MTI) – Efficient lobbying for Hungary is what the country needs and this can be delivered by the ruling Fidesz party in the EU and in the EP, the deputy prime minister said at a campaign event on Friday.
Addressing a local forum of about 200 people in eastern Hungary’s Nyirbogat, Tibor Navracsics said that his party was hoping for winning this year’s EP election just as it did in 2004 and in 2009 and trusted that it could achieve the same this year and go on carrying out its “responsible European policy”.
Looking back on the regime change 25 years ago, Navracsics said that our ideas of democracy and multi-party system bringing forward jobs, well-being and good salaries went astray and were followed by rude awakening. This illusion surfaced again in 2004 when Hungary joined the bloc and many imagined that “money would be pouring into the country”.
Many are still disappointed today and this sentiment have been exploited by extremist forces with an agenda of exiting the EU, he said.
He added that Europe needed “neither leeches nor sulky ones” but nation states that formulate their strategies through debates and protect their interests.
