Attack by teenage gang raises fears over youth violence in Budapest. The latest victim of a knife attack in the Hungarian capital is a 15-year-old girl.

A 15-year-old girl was left fighting for her life after being stabbed for her mobile phone in central Budapest in the early hours of Saturday, in an attack carried out by a gang of teenage girls.

The assault took place shortly after 4 a.m. in Terézváros, the city’s VI district, a busy nightlife area popular with tourists. Paramedics were called to Nagymező Street, outside the Peaches & Cream nightclub, where the victim had suffered a stab wound to the chest and required urgent hospital treatment.

15-year-old girl nearly killed in Budapest’s city centre

According to prosecutors, a confrontation broke out between the victim and another 15-year-old girl outside the club. During the scuffle, the victim was pushed to the ground. Two accomplices — aged 17 and 18 — then joined in, punching the girl while one of them stole her mobile phone from her bag.

Moments later, and for reasons that remain unclear, the youngest suspect produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the left side of the chest, causing life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, the girl had lost a staggering amount of blood by the time help arrived. Paramedics rushed her straight to paediatric surgery, while police cordoned off the street for a thorough investigation. Gergely Papp, owner of Peaches and Cream says, the venue was already closed at the time, with just a handful of staff still on site. They sprang into action, aiding the stricken girl, summoning the authorities, and assisting with their enquiries.

The three suspects fled the scene by car, discarding the weapon along the way. Police arrested them within an hour in Budapest’s 8th district, along with two additional associates.
