Shocking VIDEOS capture apocalyptic midge invasion at Lake Balaton

Change language:

Disturbing videos have emerged from around Lake Balaton, showing an unprecedented invasion of non-biting midges (Chironomus balatonicus) so overwhelming that locals say it has become nearly impossible to remain in the area. In some places, entering the water is unbearable, as a thick layer of insects—sometimes as wide as a finger—floats across the lake’s surface. The Balaton Limnological Institute has warned that the situation is set to worsen, with this year’s extreme weather to blame.

Life near Lake Balaton becoming unbearable

Blikk recently reported that conditions in and around Lake Balaton have become almost intolerable due to an outbreak of non-biting midges unlike anything witnessed before. Video footage shows swarms so dense that, at certain times of day, it is nearly impossible to walk or breathe outdoors. Residents describe insects flying straight into mouths, noses, and ears the moment they step outside.

The only saving grace in this otherwise apocalyptic scene is that the midges do not bite. Locals admit that if they did, the region would likely already be abandoned. Even so, many are considering leaving the area altogether.

The problem is not that the insects harm people or the ecosystem, but that their sheer numbers are making everyday life a struggle. Taking a walk with a pram, for instance, is almost impossible, as the swarms cover everything in their path. Meanwhile, midge larvae are accumulating on the lake’s surface in finger-thick layers, deterring locals and visitors alike from swimming. The infestation is also striking a serious blow to the region’s tourism industry.

Heavy blow to local tourism

“From Füred to Boglár, and down to the Ezüstpart in Siófok, the water was covered with dead midges,” one local woman told the paper. “People are horrified at the thought of going into the lake.” She added that she has lived in Balatonföldvár and Siófok all her life, and has never seen anything remotely comparable.
