EU capable of transcending difficulties, Navracsics says at study launch
Budapest (MTI) – There may be an economic setback and disputes over European identity but European culture, identity and integration are able to transcend these difficulties, Hungary’s EU commissioner said on Thursday, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS).
Debates have taken place over the past 7-8 years about whether Europe itself is in crisis or at the start of a new era, Tibor Navracsics said at the launch of a Hungarian Academy of Sciences study entitled Reframing Europe’s future – Challenges and failures of the European construction.
The economy tends to grab the headlines of a crisis yet other important question such as European identity, what this constitutes and what Europe as a community of communities means are also important, he said. Despite the economic setbacks and debates surrounding European identity it would be a mistake to conclude a new Europe is needed, he said, adding that “European culture, identity and integration can transcend the current difficulties.”
