Europe in crisis, Hungary must defend its identity, says Orbán government

The Hungarian government is committed to the notion of national solidarity and will always advocate for the identity and rights of Hungarians living outside of the country, Barna Pál Zsigmond, a state secretary at the European Union Affairs Ministry, said at an event to mark the 20 August Hungarian national holiday in Vienna on Saturday.

Zsigmond said that commitment extended to the past, the present and the future of the nation. He added that protecting Hungary’s sovereignty was a “thousand-year-old heritage in our blood”.

Zsigmond said Europe was in crisis and faced challenges that called for strong leadership and strategic thinking. “As it is apparent those are lacking, responses to challenges have been poor,” he added.

He said the continent’s competitiveness and economy had been shaken, while its standing on the international stage had declined, and warned that the impact of the war in Ukraine could deprive generations to come.

“Brussels has its own bureaucratic interests at heart, not the people of Europe,” he said. “We continue to believe in Europe, but there must be change in Brussels,” he added.

  1. The EU is in crisis? We have the highest inflation and the poorest country in the EU. We have a crumbling education system, transportation system, and healthcare system. Which sounds more like a place in crisis to you?
