“History shows that staying out of war is the only good response, because small countries can only be losers in the conflicts of bigger ones,” State Secretary Bence Rétvári said at an event marking the European day of remembrance for the victims of totalitarian dictatorships on Saturday.

Speaking at a monument to forced labourers in Budapest’s District I, Rétvári said totalitarian ideologies had gained ground in 20th century Hungary because the wars had “weakened the middle classes”. “During peacetime, when the middle class was strong, there was no room for extremists and they could not enter politics,” he added.

“Neither communism nor Nazism were invented in Hungary; the devastating ideologies of the 20th century had nothing to do with what was Hungarian,” Rétvári said. “That clearly shows that Hungary must focus on its own values, the nation, independence, Christianity and the family,” he added.

Rétvári said Western Europeans needed to know the history of Eastern Europe as well as Eastern Europeans knew the history of the West, adding that knowledge of the past was an important element of equality.
