European Table Tennis Championships officially get under way with opening ceremony
Budapest (MTI) – The 2016 European Table Tennis Championships officially got under way in Budapest with the event’s opening ceremony at the Tuskecsarnok arena on Tuesday evening.
Miklós Stocker, the secretary-general of the Hungarian Table Tennis Federation (MOATSZ) and the event’s tournament director, told a press conference before the opening ceremony that it was “huge” for Hungary to be hosting the championships with 250 athletes from 44 countries. The organisers will do everything they can to make sure that the event runs smoothly, he said.
MOATSZ President Roland Natran noted that this year’s event was Hungary’s third time to host the European Table Tennis Championships, having already hosted the tournament in 1958 and 1982.
International Table Tennis Federation CEO and former MOATSZ secretary-general Judit Faragó said it was an honour for her to welcome the athletes to the championships in her home city.
