Budapest, February 10 (MTI) – The largest illegal cigarette factory exposed in Europe so far has been shut down in Vecses near Budapest, the tax authority NAV told a press conference on Tuesday.
Tax investigators seized 22 tonnes of tobacco and 2.3 million cigarettes that would have been sufficient to manufacture 1.5 million packets. The brand Golden Mount is originally produced in the United Arab Emirates and popular in the United Kingdom. The bootleg cigarettes seized have a market value of 2.5 billion forints (EUR 8.14m) in the UK.
According to the tax office, the illegal production facility has committed an excise tax fraud to the tune of 200 million forints.
A total of nine Bulgarian citizens, one Israeli and one Hungarian man have been taken in pre-trial detention.
