Hungary’s extreme drought sparks devastating wildfires, destroying hundreds of hectares of crops and property – PHOTOS

The relentless heatwave and prolonged drought gripping Hungary have resulted in a series of catastrophic wildfires across Bács-Kiskun County, devastating agricultural lands and threatening rural communities.
On Friday afternoon, a massive blaze engulfed over 500 hectares of standing grain fields and stubble near Bácsborsód and Katymár, forcing firefighters into a gruelling battle against the flames that lasted several hours. The fierce wind conditions only fueled the inferno, complicating firefighting efforts.
Dozens of professional and volunteer firefighters from multiple neighbouring towns joined forces in the emergency operation to contain the wildfire.
“The fire consumed a vast area, with standing crops and stubble burning uncontrollably over 500 hectares,” the MetFigyelő Facebook page reported. The situation was exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave and extremely dry vegetation, conditions described by authorities as “extreme fire hazards.”
Meanwhile, a heatwave alert remains active across Hungary, further aggravating fire risks and putting strain on firefighting resources.
