Hungary is experiencing its first major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures approaching record levels and forecasts suggesting the scorching weather will continue well into next week.

Friday saw temperatures reach 38°C for the first time this year, while meteorologists warn that much of the country could face highs of 36–37°C over the weekend. According to the national weather forecast, Saturday will bring plenty of sunshine across Hungary, although scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon, particularly in the north-east, central regions and along the western border.

Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 36°C, with evening temperatures remaining unusually warm at 20–28°C.

Thunderstorms could bring sudden disruptions

While the dominant story of the weekend will be the intense heat, forecasters are also warning of isolated thunderstorms. Several counties have been placed under weather alerts due to the risk of thunderstorms, which could be accompanied by strong or even gale-force wind gusts.

Conditions may become even more unstable on Sunday, when cloud cover is expected to increase, and showers, thunderstorms and localised downpours become more widespread. The lowest chance of rain is forecast for eastern Hungary. Despite the possibility of storms, temperatures are expected to remain between 31°C and 36°C throughout the weekend.

Masses of travellers head to Lake Balaton

The hot weather has already triggered a major getaway rush towards Lake Balaton. According to Útinform, congestion began building on the M7 motorway early on Saturday morning as thousands of motorists headed for Hungary’s most popular holiday destination.

Traffic lanes were already heavily congested around 9 AM, particularly between the M1-M7 motorway junction and Székesfehérvár. Drivers were warned to expect significantly longer travel times throughout the day as holiday traffic continues to increase.

Nationwide heat alert in force

In response to the extreme conditions, Hungary’s National Public Health Centre has issued a second-level heat alert covering the entire country. The warning took effect at midnight on 20 June and will remain in force until midnight on 23 June. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.

Health experts urge caution

Experts recommend avoiding direct sunlight between 11 AM and 4 PM, when UV radiation levels are expected to be particularly intense. Staying hydrated is also essential, especially for children, elderly people and those spending extended periods outdoors.

Health professionals warn that dehydration and heat exhaustion can develop quickly during prolonged exposure to high temperatures or poorly ventilated indoor spaces. With the current heatwave expected to persist into next week, authorities are encouraging people to monitor weather updates closely and take extra care while travelling, exercising or spending time outdoors.
