Family of teacher killed in 2006 lynching set to receive compensation

The family of Lajos Szögi, a teacher lynched after a minor road accident in the northeastern Hungarian village of Olaszliszka in 2006, is set to receive compensation of 4.9 million forints (EUR 15,200), the daily Magyar Nemzet said on Wednesday.

Szögi was beaten to death by three men after causing mild injuries to a child in a road accident on October 15, 2006.

The perpetrators were sentenced in 2009 to 17, 15 and 10 years in prison and were ordered to pay 46 million forints in compensation to the family of the victim.

Dezső H, the primary perpetrator, has sued the Hungarian state for inadequate conditions at the prison he was held. He won his case, and the compensation he received has been handed to the family of the victim as an installment of the compensation due to them, György Schadl, head of the Hungarian judiciary executive body which collects outstanding debts, told the paper.
