Fidesz MEP: Péter Magyar’s mother filed defamation complaint against me

Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch has said that the mother of prime minister-designate Péter Magyar has filed a defamation complaint against him, in a dispute linked to claims about judicial impartiality.

Deutsch confirms complaint over public statements

Tamás Deutsch announced on social media that Mónika Erőss, the mother of Péter Magyar, had filed a complaint for defamation.

According to Deutsch, the complaint relates to statements he made publicly concerning claims that a judge involved in a high-profile media case had connections to the Tisza Party.

He said his remarks were based on reports originating from an anonymous social media post, which alleged that data linked to the judge had appeared among information leaked from a party-related application.

Dispute centres on controversial court ruling

The case is linked to a December 2025 court decision that banned the distribution of a special issue of the newspaper Bors, which had focused on the alleged economic policies of the Tisza Party.

The ruling was described by some pro-government figures as unprecedented. Deutsch argued that the judge involved had shown political bias, a claim that has not been independently verified.

In his statement, Deutsch also referred to Magyar’s family background, noting that his mother had previously held senior positions within the judicial system.

Strong rhetoric and legal response

Deutsch defended his comments as factual and said he would not rely on parliamentary immunity, adding that he would appear in court if required.

Addressing Magyar’s mother directly, he wrote that “threatening a lawyer with a lawsuit is like threatening a chef with cooking”, signalling his intention to contest the case.

He also criticised what he described as attempts to silence him, drawing parallels with past political eras.
