Fidesz: proposes life sentences for metal robbery
(MTI) – Anyone who seriously compromises the functioning of public services by, for instance, stealing copper cables, could get a life prison sentence, according to a bill submitted by a Fidesz lawmaker on Monday.
The amendment proposal to the penal code seeks to raise sentences to 5-10 years for people who cause disruption to services that rely on transport infrastructure. For people working in organised criminal gangs that cause significant damage, the sentence should rise to 15 years, while armed criminals who cause especially great damage should get up to twenty years or even a life sentence, said Istvan Boldog.
Explaining his proposal, he said that level crossings, safety lights and public facilities had been damaged over the past few years due to the robbery of cables containing metals, such as copper, which fetch a high price on the black market.
