The company operating the TurkStream gas pipeline will move to Hungary from the Netherlands, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Moscow on Tuesday.

This will secure the operation of the TurkStream pipeline despite all legal and financial attacks, the minister said.

Speaking at a meeting of the Hungarian-Russian joint economic committee, Szijjártó said Hungary’s secure energy supply cannot function without Russia today, and this is not a political or ideological issue, but a physical one. Without this energy cooperation, household energy prices could increase threefold in Hungary, he added.

Fight with Kyiv and Brussels

“The prime minister concluded the necessary agreements in Washington and here in Moscow so that our energy cooperation can continue without disruption. At the same time, we must fight with Brussels and Kyiv to ensure that our energy supply is secure in the long term,” he said.

“Our energy cooperation is constantly being attacked legally from Brussels, and the oil pipeline is being attacked physically from Kyiv,” Szijjártó went on.

TurkStream operator to move to Hungary

“Therefore, we decided to move the company operating the TurkStream gas pipeline from the Netherlands to Hungary,” Szijjártó said.

The minister then assured Hungarian oil and gas company MOL’s investments in Russia of his support, expressing hope that this success story will be expanded with new elements.

“It is clear that the ownership structure in the international energy market will change significantly due to the sanctions environment. There are two Hungarian companies that are strong enough to sit at the negotiating table in such a case, and we support both companies in being able to conduct successful negotiations in this international energy market situation turned upside down,” he said.
