New National Bank Governor Varga fines the bank of PM Orbán’s son-in-law, Foodora also fined

The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) on Friday said it fined Hungarian lender Gránit Bank HUF 49m for minor shortfalls affecting corporate governance and credit risk management. Gráint Bank is in the interest of István Tiborcz, the son-in-law of PM Orbán. The National Bank’s new governor is Mihály Varga, Hungary’s former finance minister. Food delivery company Foodora was also fined but by another body.
The central bank and financial market regulator said the shortcomings did not pose risk to the lender’s secure operation.
Foodora fined for consumer protection shortfall
The Budapest Metropolitan Government Office has fined food delivery company Foodora HUF 50m for consumer protection shortfalls, the office’s head said in a post on social media on Friday. Botond Sára said the shortfalls were uncovered in a probe launched following complaints about late deliveries, food quality, compensation and prices.
He added that the government office would continue to monitor complaints. In a separate statement, the National Economy Ministry said it had initiated the probe of Foodora that revealed misleading customer communication and improper complaint management. Foodora must take remedial measures in addition to paying the fine, it added.
