Foreign man almost killed his colleague with a knife in Szeged

A court has sentenced a foreign man to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for four years, after he attacked a fellow foreign worker with a belt and knife in Szeged at the end of February, prosecutors said.

Flóra Saághy, spokeswoman for the Csongrád-Csanád County Chief Prosecutor’s Office, told MTI on Tuesday that the charge related to a workplace dispute on the morning of 27 February between the defendant—who worked on a construction site—and a colleague, the Hungarian News Agency wrote.

In a rage, the suspect first tried to strike his colleague with his belt, but when others intervened, he grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the abdomen amid life-threatening threats. Colleagues eventually subdued the attacker.

The perpetrator, who had been in custody, was brought before the court by the chief prosecutor’s office on an expedited basis for the attempted offence of causing life-threatening bodily injury. The Szeged Court found the man—who admitted the offence—guilty as charged, sentencing him to two years’ imprisonment suspended for four years, and ordering his deportation from Hungary for five years.

Both the prosecution and defence accepted the ruling, rendering it final, the spokeswoman said.
