Fraud ring leader returned from UK to Hungary
A leader of a crime ring which committed many of the so-called “grandparent scams” in Hungary was transported from the United Kingdom to Hungary last week, the Hungarian police said on Wednesday.
Ernő H. was one of four people who coordinated the scams committed in Hungary from the UK.
The crime ring typically phoned elderly people and pretended to be a grandchild in distress, trying to scam them into giving their savings to a band member posing as the grandchild’s friend.
The ring was indetified in 2019, when an international arrest warrant was issued against Ernő H. He was arrested in the UK in late 2020 and transported to Hungary last Wednesday.
The ring is estimated to have defrauded people of some 47 million forints (EUR 135,000) altogether, the police said.
