A day at Lake Balaton is becoming increasingly expensive for many families, with beach admission fees often overtaking accommodation costs as the biggest holiday expense. For a family of four, a full day at a paid beach can easily cost HUF 10,000–15,000, prompting many visitors to seek out the lake’s growing number of free public beaches instead.

The good news is that more than 40 beaches around Lake Balaton remain free to use in 2026, offering visitors the chance to enjoy Hungary’s largest lake without paying an entrance fee.

“Free” does not always mean cost-free

Although these beaches do not charge admission, visitors should still keep additional expenses in mind. One of the most common hidden costs is parking. Many free beaches, particularly those popular with tourists arriving by car, are surrounded by paid parking zones.

Depending on the length of your stay, parking charges can sometimes rival—or even exceed—the entrance fee at certain paid beaches, particularly on the northern shore, where parking is often free outside the larger towns. Even so, free beaches usually remain the more affordable option for families spending an entire day by the lake, writes csodásbalaton.hu.

Keszthely’s Helikon Beach becomes free for everyone

One of the biggest changes for the 2026 season is in Keszthely, where Helikon Beach has been opened to the public free of charge.

The city removed part of the beach’s fencing in early May, ending paid admission and allowing unrestricted public access. Mayor Gergely Tóth said the decision fulfilled a campaign promise, arguing that “Lake Balaton belongs to everyone” and that residents and visitors alike should be able to enjoy the waterfront without barriers.

The approximately 20,000-square-metre beach continues to offer a wide range of facilities, including:

  • landscaped grassy areas with shade trees;
  • playgrounds;
  • snack bars;
  • volleyball court;
  • table tennis tables;
  • mini football pitch;
  • showers;
  • baby-changing room;
  • children’s toilets.

These amenities remain available without an entrance fee.

Most free beaches at Lake Balaton are still on the southern shore

The southern shore continues to dominate when it comes to free bathing areas. Popular holiday destinations such as Balatonboglár, Balatonfenyves, Balatonberény, Siófok and Zamárdi all offer several stretches of shoreline where visitors can swim without purchasing a ticket.

The northern shore has considerably fewer free beaches, but visitors can still find no-cost bathing areas in places including Balatonakarattya, Balatonkenese, Keszthely, Örvényes and Tihany.
