Global organisation moving to Hungarian capital
The United Nations’ World Food Programme moving its financial centre to Budapest will also contribute to efforts aimed at maintaining secure food supply chains and eliminating famine in the world, the minister of agriculture said in a statement on Thursday.
István Nagy referred to the WFP as the largest multilateral food aid organisation in the world, with 5,600 trucks, 100 aircraft, and 30 ships constantly delivering food to people inflicted by war or natural disasters, as well as to those impacted by climate change.
The WFP’s goals are “the same as those of the Hungarian government”, the minister said, adding that the programme was aimed at providing aid to refugees close to their home or in a neighbouring country in order to facilitate an early return for them. The aid delivered is instrumental to prevent the recipients from leaving their homeland, he added.
The new facility will employ 81 people, 85 percent of them being Hungarian experts, from the autumn of this year.
