Government to spend at least EUR 3.17m on Paks regional development
Budapest, January 19 (MTI) – The government will allocate at least 1 billion forints (EUR 3.17m) this year to the development of the area around Paks, up from 750 million forints last year, the government office chief said on Tuesday.
Janos Lazar told a meeting of the Paks social council that proposals and plans from local councils concerning the efficient use of resources are welcome, a statement by the prime minister’s office showed.
Lazar said the Paks II nuclear power station development project was progressing according to schedule. The European Union does not question that the new blocks are needed but Brussels has a trade-policy dispute with the Hungarian government which is not endangering or delaying the project’s implementation, he added.
The strategic target is to get as many Hungarian companies as possible to participate in the project and to ensure that a safe nuclear power station is built that can provide cheap electricity to consumers.
Local mayor Janos Suli, of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrats, said that thanks to the cooperation developed under the arrangements of the social council, villages and towns in the area received sufficient support, including funding to civil organisations, sports clubs and for various other successful development projects.
