Hungarian government’s website still shows support for Ukraine’s EU accession, Tisza Party points out
The government is spending “tens of billions of taxpayers’ forints” to argue against Ukraine’s European Union entry, its website is “still full of posts suggesting vehement support” for Ukraine’s endeavours, the Tisza Party said in a statement on Wednesday.
In its statement, the opposition party reiterated its position concerning Ukraine’s possible EU integration: the issue should be put to an official referendum “when the criteria and date for the entry are public”.
Tisza leader Péter Magyar uploaded a video to his Facebook page with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressing support for Ukraine’s EU entry, while the statement quoted another post, with a photo of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, saying “Hungary supports Ukraine’s EU membership.”
DK backs referendum on Ukraine’s EU accession
The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) backs holding a referendum on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, a board member of the party said on Wednesday. Addressing an online press conference, Sándor Rónai said it turned out that ruling Fidesz’s politicians and the opposition Tisza Party’s voters both supported Ukraine’s EU accession.
He cited a statement by Szijjártó from March 2022 in which the minister had expressed Hungary’s support for an initiative by eight EU countries aimed at facilitating Ukraine’s European integration. Rónai said Szijjártó had “admitted that they support Ukraine’s EU membership”.
Meanwhile, he noted that 58 percent of respondents to Tisza’s Voice of the Nation survey backed Ukraine’s EU accession, “which Péter Magyar, the party’s leader, conceded”.
“While the right-wing parties accuse each other of being pro-Ukraine, it is only the left — meaning the Democratic Coalition — that is open and honest about this subject,” Rónai said. He said DK supported admitting Ukraine to the bloc, provided that it met the accession criteria, adding that the decision should be left up to the public in a referendum.
