Govt planning to reshuffle tax authority management
Budapest, July 9 (MTI) – Changes in the management of Hungary’s tax authority NAV “may be” necessary in connection with the United States banning senior officials from entering that country under corruption charges, the economy minister said in an interview published by business weekly Figyelo on Thursday.
Mihaly Varga told the paper that the way last year’s scandal was handled had “weakened NAV’s current leadership” and public trust in the organisation waned. He added that his ministry was also planning changes to make the tax authority’s operations more efficient.
Concerning NAV chief Ildiko Vida, who was among the six officials banned from the US, Varga said that “she would stay in her post as long as there is mutual trust” between her and her employer. He added that the head of the tax authority is appointed by the prime minister.
The minister said he was planning to replace several officials in his ministry, and set up a separate state secretariat for taxation, an area currently integrated in general finance.
On another subject, Varga said that the Hungarian state would sell its stake in MKB and Budapest Bank within the next year rather than in three years as earlier planned with preference given to Hungarian investors.
