The Defence Minister has called for an immediate internal inquiry by the Chief of the General Staff following a hand grenade accident at the Újdörögd training ground in March 2025, the minister announced on Facebook on Saturday.

Another kind of responsibility

In his post, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said he accepted the prosecutor’s decision, noting that establishing criminal liability was not his responsibility. He added, however, that “there is another kind of responsibility”, which had led him to take what he described as a difficult but unavoidable decision, the Hungarian news agency wrote.

He made it clear that neither he nor the injured party agreed with the prosecution’s conclusion. According to the minister, an incident in which someone loses both hands cannot be closed without consequences.

“It must be established whether there is military or professional responsibility, and whether there is political responsibility,” Ruszin-Szendi said in a video message. He added that beyond those directly involved, society as a whole has a right to answers.

The minister said the inquiry would take approximately 60 days, after which its findings would be made public. He wrote that the investigation was owed to the young woman “who wished to serve her country and paid a price that no human being should ever have to pay”.

The tragic accident occurred in March 2025 at the Hungarian Defence Forces’ training ground in Újdörögd. During a voluntary defence training exercise organised for government officials, a live hand grenade exploded in the hands of a 29-year-old woman during a throwing drill. She lost both hands as a result of the blast.
