Guess which is the busiest railway station in Hungary!

Hungary MÁV railway tourism transport

Close to 700 million passengers rode on the trains and buses of state-owned MÁV-Volán group last year, MÁV said on Sunday. But which one is the busiest railway station?

Almost 97 million passengers rode on MÁV-Start long-distance trains last year, while the business registered 4.75 billion passenger-kilometres, up from 3.1 billion in 2021. The share of long-distance rail tickets purchased online or using the MÁV mobile application reached 35 percent and the share bought at ticket machines rose to 18 percent.

Around 63 million passengers travelled on MÁV-HÉV rapid suburban rail trains in and around the capital last year. Volánbusz buses carried 539 million passengers and registered 6.9 billion passenger-kilometres in 2022.

The busiest railway station is Nyugati, with 18 million passengers in 2022. Vác stands out among the stations with 3.7 million passengers, napi.hu reports.

  1. Re-Think / Re-examination: says:
    30/01/2023 at 10:20

MAV – Think this SERIOUSLY through.
There is, in my opinion, a SMARTER way – to give additional travellers satisfaction and on train facilities – on MAV services.
LISTEN to your constant regional cities and outside the boarders of Hungary – the experiences of travellers and there OPINIONS and Recommendations.
We reside in central Budapest, District V and are avid users of Public Transport and MAV and “other” – inter-regional train service providers.
The past month – Kelenfold to Pecs return – 2.30 minutes of train travel, buffet on train, seating extremely comfortable – rating 10/10.
Kelenfold to Graz in Austria return – 4.45 minutes on train – seating extremely comfortable BUT – there was No Buffet Car.
The carriage number consist to Pecs 8 cars.
Carriage consist to Graz, Austria just 4 cars.
Numbers of travellers on Pecs trip on train HEAVY – up & back.
Numbers of travellers on Graz trip extremely light – Kelenfold to Graz, Austria.
The return Graz, Austria – to border Austria/Hungary – to Kelenfold – it “Behaves” functions like a suburban “shuttle” train, with NUMEROUS stops some of not even a minute – in the Austrian section of this trip.
We caught the 2.37pm out of Graz mid-week back to Kelenfold.
We don’t example trips to Pecs and Graz – we avoid week-end long distance regional and inter-regional train travel – out of Budapest, and country’s we may be visiting.
Kelenfold – Graz it appears YOU have Hungarian MAV and Swiss Railways “jointly” by arrangements – operating this line / service.
No Buffet – but at the border there is a Diesel change over.
This “change over” – not forgetting the carriage consist of the train just 4 – “light” by this time in passenger numbers which going out from the border to Graz, the front carriage was empty 95% of the journey time.
The diesel change over of 20-25 minutes process – why not a TROLLEY arrangement of refreshments Coffee, tea beverages and “other” on the trolley sandwich, cake – just very basic, but SOMETHINK, after sitting on the train from Kelenfold for 3 plus hours – and on return from the Austrian border to Kelenfold 3 hours.
On our return, we made sandwiches in our apartment, and “feed” ourselves, plus a beverage & water, for our 4.45 hour trip home.
MAV – your reply muchly would focus on – its ALL got to do with – Bums on Seats – passenger volume & cost of operating running the service.
Because we are AVID train users inside Hungary and outside out borders – just 4.45 hours on a train and NO buffet refreshment car – needs re-examination to ENHANCE people to travel by train, and as we do, leave the Bavarian Motor Works vehicle in our garage.
In a re-think / re-examination process centering on the Kelenfold – Graz run/service – the bottom line factor, that MAV must protect, the service in particular provided for PASSENGER on-board comforts – it must be a Win-Win situation.
It can’t be in these HUMONGOUS challenging Financial & Economic times we ALL are living in Hungary, that MAV would bear the cost, if exampled a buffet or trolley service was introduced, which may require a pricing increase.
Level playing field, that a Win-Win solution is amicable found/invented or created.
Bratislava back to Budapest, mid Sunday morning service, train travel time 2.30 minutes, passenger numbers LOW, train consist 5 carriages, in our extremely pleasant and comfortable open plan carriage, which felt like we had a carriage of our own, which ironically and factually we have had at times in our Global Train Travel – ADVENTURES.
Last occasion this happened, travelling Manchester Piccadilly to Chester in the United Kingdom, the conductor, delightful gentlemen, think he was quite bored and played the role of a tour guide, pointing out places of interest as we “travelled” on to Chester.
Bratislava to Budapest, sitting back watching the country side go by, and into our open plan carriage, wheeled by a conductor, a refreshment trolley.
Splattered all over the trolley the name Starbucks.
I “Rest my Case” on making or giving an opinion on that one /
Train travel – we VENTURE on and Love it.
