It will remain very hot in most parts of the country today, but a band of rain moving in from the south-west will reach Hungary, bringing gale-force winds, showers, thunderstorms and, in places, hailstones of up to 2cm in diameter. Another change in the weather will follow.

Gales, hail, showers and thunderstorms are on the way

According to HungaroMet, an area of high pressure is continuing to shape the exceptionally dry and hot weather over Hungary. Today, however, a band of rain will reach the country’s south-western and southern regions. This will trigger a rapid increase in cloud cover, lower daytime temperatures and bring showers and thunderstorms.

The early hours were refreshingly cool after the past few days, with temperatures remaining below 16C everywhere and falling as low as 8C in some areas. At Zabar, the country’s coldest spot, thermometers showed just 5.3C at dawn.

Weather to take another turn this week

The band of rain arriving from the south-west will provide some variety after the recent spell of monotonous weather. HungaroMet forecasts strong and occasionally storm-force gusts of up to 80 km/h in several areas, together with intense cloud formation and small hailstones measuring around 2cm across, Szeretlek Magyarország wrote.

The rain band will move slowly north-eastwards before breaking up, bringing only light rain to Transdanubia. By dawn on Wednesday, even that will have cleared, and temperatures will begin to rise sharply once again. Highs of 34–35C are expected in the days ahead, while another plume of Saharan dust could settle over parts of the country.
