A fire has broken out in dry grass and leaf litter near Bányász Street in Szolnok, eastern Hungary, with flames spreading in several directions and threatening nearby homes. The National Directorate General for Disaster Management reported the blaze on Saturday, saying local firefighters were working to contain and prevent it from reaching residential buildings.
Firefighters use five water jets
Professional first responders from Szolnok tackled the flames with six water jets. Additional crews from Cegléd have been dispatched to assist, while the disaster management operations service also travelled to the scene. The dry vegetation allowed the flames to spread, making the proximity of residential properties a particular concern.
However, Tamás Kisnémet, deputy spokesperson for the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Disaster Management Directorate, told the Hungarian news agency MTI that no measures to protect or evacuate residents have been necessary so far. They have managed to bring it under control and prevent further spread.

Recent large vegetation blazes in Hungary
The Szolnok incident comes just days after a much larger incident near Polgár, where around 100 hectares of land were affected. The blaze, which broke out near the Route 35 main road, also destroyed around 2,000 bales of straw and four buildings. Firefighters have since managed to contain those flames as well.
