Head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee visiting Indonesia
Jakarta, January 12 (MTI) – Indonesia is likely to make various diplomatic efforts to play a mediating role in the stabilisation of the Islamic world, the head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, visiting the country, said on Tuesday.
Internal disputes within Islam have grown to become the most important issues in international security, Zsolt Nemeth told MTI by phone from Jakarta. He cited the Saudi-Iran dispute and “proxy wars” that divide the Islamic world from Syria to Yemen.
Indonesia, being the most populous democratic Islamic country in the world, can play a special role in stabilisation, Nemeth said.
Nemeth, accompanied by Zsolt Csenger-Zalan, his (Fidesz) foreign affairs committee colleague, said that the two sides had also discussed bilateral issues and Prime Minister Viktor Orban is expected to pay a visit to Indonesia.
“High-level political contact is constant between the two countries,” Nemeth said.
He said there will be soon openings for “promising bilateral agreements” to be signed. He noted an agreement on water affairs, a type of accord which is invaluable for a rapidly urbanising country. Another concerns scholarships for 50 Indonesian higher-education students to study in Hungary.
