UV-B radiation levels exceeding warning thresholds are expected across almost the entire country on Wednesday, HungaroMet Zrt. said in a statement to MTI on Tuesday. It seems that the heatwave will grip Hungary for long.

According to forecasts, very high UV-B radiation is likely in Western, Central and Southern Transdanubia, Pest County and Budapest, as well as across the Northern and Southern Great Plain and Northern Hungary. HungaroMet has urged the public to take heightened precautions against sunburn and, where possible, to avoid direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm.

Nationwide highest-level heat alert to take effect from Saturday

The national chief medical officer has extended the current second-level heat alert nationwide until midnight on Friday, 26 June. From 00:00 on Saturday, 27 June, the alert will be raised to the highest, third level, remaining in force until midnight on Tuesday, 30 June, the disaster management authority and the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK) said in a joint statement on Tuesday, MTI wrote.

The statement warns that persistently extreme heat is expected in the coming days, placing significant strain on both the body and the mind. The most vulnerable groups remain young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those suffering from cardiovascular conditions.

Authorities have once again called on the public to take extra care, urging people to look after themselves and one another during the intense heat.
