Budapest, April 4 (MTI) – Applications to higher education institutions in Hungary increased by 5 percent in 2016 compared with last year, the human resources ministry’s state secretary for education said on Monday.
A total of 111,162 students applied to continue their studies in a university or college in the autumn, László Palkovics said. Fully 95,883 of those applications are for state-financed places, while 15,279 are for self-financed places.
Fully 17 percent of students applied to a programme in the field of economics, 14 percent to engineering programmes and 13 percent to teacher training programmes. The proportion of applicants to medical programmes and IT remained unchanged, with 9 percent of students applying to the former and 8 percent to the latter field.
Budapest’s Eötvös Lóránd University remained the most popular destination for applicants, followed by the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the University of Pécs.
