Preventive runway maintenance began on Monday at Debrecen Airport, halting operations at the facility from 1.45pm until 7am on Friday, the airport announced on its website.

The works aim to ensure the long-term, uninterrupted functioning of the airport’s infrastructure and the continuous improvement of the runway’s condition, it said. During the maintenance, specialists will conduct thorough inspections and, where necessary, refurbishments to enable the airport to deliver the highest standards of service at all times.

In a statement, the airport highlighted that it had informed airlines of the maintenance, scheduled to minimise disruption to flights. The planned works will affect four scheduled services, it added. According to the Hungarian News Agency, operations were suspended in July 2024 to repair runway damage, while last year saw a four-day shutdown for similar preventive maintenance.

Emirates increases flight frequency

Emirates to resume daily flights between Budapest and Dubai from June, as airline nears return to normal operations with 96% of global network restored, it said on Monday. The airline’s current four weekly services between Budapest and Dubai will expand to five from May 18, rising to six flights between May 22 and 31, before returning to daily operations in June, according to the statement.

In recent weeks, Emirates has gradually restarted services across the American continent, Europe, Africa, West Asia, the Middle East and Gulf region, as well as the Far East and Australia, the announcement said. The carrier now operates more than 1,300 weekly flights to 137 destinations in 72 countries, equivalent to 76% of pre-disruption capacity.

The statement recalled that even during the reduced schedule prompted by the Iranian conflict from March 1 to April 30, Emirates carried 4.7 million passengers – a strong indicator of sustained travel demand and confidence in the airline. Development projects continued unabated throughout the disruptions, it noted.
