Hungarian Islamist planning mass murders – here is the court sentence

Kende V., a Hungarian Islamist, is accused of preparing a terrorist act. He was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison by the Metropolitan Court. The young man from Kecskemét cannot be released on parole.

He first converted to the religion in 2020, then became an ISIS supporter in 2021

The 22-year-old Kende V. officially adopted the Islamic religion in one of Budapest’s mosques in June 2020, just 2 years ago. Last year, during the spring, he became a follower of the radical, jihadist trend in Islam and a supporter of the Islamic State’s terrorist organisation, writes 24.hu.

According to the indictment, the Islamic State supporter later took an oath of allegiance to the terrorist organisation by drawing the flag of the terrorist organisation on the wall of his home room and then saying the oath in English specifically obtained for that purpose.

According to the indictment, the man planned to carry out an assassination, looking for possible targets and a way to commit it. Between March and May, he communicated with several people on various online platforms about committing terrorist acts. He received written materials and advice from a user regarding the homemade manufacture of a nail bomb. He also started to procure the materials needed to make a pipe bomb.

He made the first steps as he ordered materials for preparing a bomb

In the process, he ordered a remote control from a web store, and at the end of May, also in the online space, he agreed with another person to carry out a high-profile assassination attempt at the same time. According to his plan, he would drive into the crowd of tourists on the promenade in Siófok, while his companion would commit a bomb attack in Budapest.

He mentioned several times in the chat rooms that they could make an explosion around the Puskás Ferenc Stadium, during the European Football Championship. He also wrote he would “fight until he dies a martyr’s death in the name of the Islamic State”. According to the indictment, he also wrote such texts in the chat rooms: “Great things will happen in Hungary soon, if Allah wills,” or that “the European Championship will be a blast.” says Telex.hu

The lawyer says he never actually wanted to commit those things

“This boy was first a Catholic, then he wanted to be a Jew, and then he converted to Islam. It also shows that he is ill, and this type of disease has been known in medicine for a very long time. The point is: Kende is just a little grey mouse in real life, but in the virtual space, he tried to be a big guy. But he wanted to actually realise what played out in his imagination,” the lawyer told Blikk in an earlier article.

The boy’s upset father feels they want to set an example with his son, which he really does not consider fair. He promises to do everything he can to protect his child.

The judgment at the first instance is not final. The young man from Kecskemét and his defender appealed primarily for the dismissal of the charges and secondly for the easing of the judgment.
