Der Spiegel reported that a Hungarian national was arrested in Germany near Passau after failing to explain the origins of a large amount of euros in cash. The 45-year-old Hungarian driver is in custody on suspicion of money laundering.

Hungarian man caught with millions of euros in cash

According to Portfolio, the Hungarian national was heading towards the Austrian border when he was stopped for a routine check. During the vehicle search, local authorities found bundles of euros hidden in various parts of the car. The total sum was seven figures. A spokesperson for the local police headquarters said it was the largest amount seized in Lower Bavaria in the last few years.

The Hungarian driver was unable to prove the origins of the cash. Police therefore launched an investigation against him for money laundering. The court also ordered his pre-trial detention. Both the money and the car were seized during the procedure.

Lots of cash near Germany-Austria border

Der Standard reported that local police regularly discover large amounts of cash hidden in vehicles around the Bavarian motorways and border crossings. If there is no believable proof of origin, the authorities always seize the cash.

Two weeks ago, Hungarian authorities seized a large amount of cash and gold bars from two cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank. The haul—40 million US dollars, 35 million euros, and nine kilograms of gold bullion—is currently in custody, while the staff have been expelled from Hungary. Oschadbank is pursuing legal action, while the Hungarian Parliament has empowered the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) to investigate the origins, destination, use, and purpose of the money and gold.
