Hungarian state purchases Munkacsy Trilogy piece from Canadian owner

painting

Budapest, February 26 (MTI) – The Hungarian state has bought Christ Before Pilate, a large-scale painting forming part of Mihaly Munkacsy’s famous Christ Trilogy, from the Canadian owner, the human resources minister said on Thursday.

The purchase was preceded by two major decisions: the owner, the Hamilton Art Gallery, agreed to sell the painting on the one hand, and the National Bank of Hungary provided the funds required for the transaction on the other, Zoltan Balog said in eastern Hungary’s Debrecen.

The contract on the purchase will be signed in late March, he added.

Munkacsy (1844-1900) painted Christ Before Pilate in 1881. The painting together with Ecce Homo!(1896) and Golgotha (1884) will be on permanent display in the local Deri Museum.
