A student fell from the fifth floor of a hostel in Székesfehérvár, in western Hungary, soon after midnight, the education minister said on Monday.

Judit Lannert said the student had survived the fall and was hospitalised in a stable condition. “I sympathise with everybody impacted by the tragic event,” the minister said, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured student.

Lannert pointed to a number of similar events in recent years and said “it is a clear signal that children and students are often left alone with a mental burden.” She also added that the mental health of youth had not been “important enough” for the education policy of previous governments.

The government often ignored such cases in earlier years, which shows the philosophy of the earlier education government subordinated to the interior ministry,” she said. “This case again is a warning that we must pay more attention to children,” the minister said.
