Hungarian students at church schools double in 6 years
Budapest, September 2 (MTI) – The number of students attending church schools in Hungary has almost doubled over the past six years, the daily Magyar Nemzet reported on Friday.
The number has risen from around 112,000 to over 200,000, the paper said. At the same time, the number of church schools has risen by around two-thirds. In the 2010/11 academic year there were 197 schools operated by churches while in 2014/15 this had risen to 336.
Head of the Pannonhalmi Benedictine school, Titusz Hardi, told the paper that many students were “escaping” from the state sector.
