Hungarian universities shine in global Shanghai Ranking – 12 in world’s top 5%!

The Hungarian higher education sector is also performing outstandingly according to the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the Culture and Innovation Ministry said on Friday.

In this year’s ranking, the University of Szeged was in the 401-500 category, ELTE was in the 501-600 category, Semmelweis University was in the 601-700 category, and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics was in the 801-900 category.

ARWU uses six indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science. More than 2,500 universities are ranked by ARWU, and the best 1,000 universities are published.

The ministry noted that the ARWU ranking, together with the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings and the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking, shows that the competitiveness of Hungarian universities is strong, as 12 of Hungary’s universities have been steadily represented in the top 5pc of the world for years.
