Hungary can help resolve water shortage in the world, Hungarian CEO says

Challenges posed by water shortage can be resolved through cooperation, innovation and strategic planning, and utilising Hungary’s expertise in water management, the CEO of the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA) told MTI by phone on Wednesday.
HEPA head Gábor Jenei addressed a regional water management industry conference organised by the Drought Prevention Institution in the Hungarian House in Brussels.
“Extreme weather conditions, including floods and droughts over the past years, have put the spotlight on the need of sustainable water management,” he said, highlighting Hungary’s expertise in forecasting those extremities. “We have the knowledge and the tools to tackle the challenges,” Jenei said.
He noted that a response to climate problems, Hungary had developed and installed its own “drought-watch” monitoring system (MARS) which provides real-time data. “This is essential for government decisions, agricultural planning and the protection of the ecosystem,” Jenei added.
He said that environmental catastrophes had seriously damaged the region of the Turkic states which had triggered serious economic problems. Jenei offered those countries Hungary’s expertise, saying that “together we can develop innovative solutions which can ensure a more flexible and sustainable future for everyone”.
Kubanychbek Omuraliev, the secretary general of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) called water shortage a common and increasing challenge for the region, highlighting the importance of cross-border cooperation in effective water management key.
He called the establishment of OTS’s European headquarters in Budapest a significant step which he said had actively cooperated with the member states on water management, irrigation, prevention and other environmental challenges.
