It is “not right” that Hungary is paying 1 million euros a day to protect Europe’s common borders, Prime Minister Péter Magyar said at the meeting of Visegrád Four prime ministers and their Irish counterpart in Bratislava on Thursday.
PM Magyar: not a good message from the EU
Magyar said at a press conference in Pozsony/Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, that he did not want to “bash Brussels”, but it was “unfair” that Hungary was paying daily to protect both its own and the European Union’s borders. “This is not right at all. It is not a good message,” he said, thanking the Czech prime minister for his solidarity on the issue.
Concerning illegal migration, Magyar said the world had changed significantly. The position once held only by Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia and Poland was now the majority view in the EU, he said. Some 19-20 member states now agreed on the need for consistent, strict action and support for border protection, he added, expressing hope for an agreement at the October European Council meeting.
