Hungary guest of honour at China Hi-Tech Fair in Shenzhen

Hungary is guest of honour at one of the most important Chinese high-tech events thanks to its achievements in cutting-edge technology, Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics told MTI on Wednesday after opening the Hungarian pavilion at the 21st China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) in Shenzhen, in south-east China.

Palkovics noted that Hungary has moved to integrate cutting-edge technology into its industry and services. On the International Monetary Fund’s list of European Union countries, Hungary offers the “most high-tech content” in its products after Germany and Denmark, he said.

The Hungarian pavilion is built around the theme “reality-virtuality continuum”, with spectacular solutions showcasing Hungarian innovation and academic achievements. A “smart wall” presents Hungarian inventions, while interactive solutions offer insights into the results in the development of self-driving cars and laser research.

CHTF, running through to Nov. 17, focuses on electronic information, energy management and environmental protection, as well as groundbreaking work in the sectors of new materials, medical biology, electro-optics, smart cities and artificial intelligence.

Last year, the fair hosted 3,300 exhibitors and drew over 500,000 visitors.

Palkovics also met representatives of companies present in Hungary to promote the enhancement of ties between the countries. He met the head of BYD, a company manufacturing electric busses in Komarom, in northern Hungary, to discuss opportunities of BYD’s participation in the development of electric vehicles.

He also discussed cooperation opportunities with BGI, a leading Chinese company in gene sequencing technology.

Palkovics met Shenzhen’s mayor for talks on an exchange programme in education and research involving the companies present both in the Chinese city and Hungary.

In view of the differences in size between Hungary and China, cooperation could feasibly be managed separately with Chinese cities, Palkovics said. Shenzhen, with its 12.5 million inhabitants and 5,500 corporations, including many active in Hungary, would offer excellent opportunities, he said. Huawei, ZTE, BYD and Comlink are present both in the city and Hungary, he noted. The city mayor and Palkovics agreed to work on a structured cooperation between the city and Hungary, he said.
