Comforting news for tourists: Hungary is among the safest countries in the world!
According to the latest ranking of the Global Peace Index (GPI), Hungary is one of the most peaceful countries in the world with reassuringly good public security. Meanwhile, on a similar list comparing cities, Budapest did not rank that well.
Hungary is safe
According to Economx, an economy-focused Hungarian news outlet, Iceland, Ireland and Austria are the safest countries in the world. In our region, Slovenia and Czechia are exceptionally safe, just like Hungary. We ranked 14th on the list of more than 160 countries, which is good news. At the end of the list are countries at war or suffering from civil war: Israel, Syria, Russia, Congo, Ukraine, Afghanistan, etc.
Pay attention to overpricing in Budapest
Meanwhile, Numbeo compared the safety of the European cities. According to their results, Budapest ranked 51st on a list of 130 cities. Foreigners complained about overpricing in bars, clubs and restaurants, a revolting method owners of such places try to deceive people from abroad who are not aware of the prices in Hungary. The complaint concerned taxi drivers. But most of the foreigners praised the hospitality of the Hungarians.
Concerning cities, tourists found the Hague the safest. Crime is low, public transport is trustworthy, and taxis are well-regulated. The second place went to Trondheim, while the third went to Munich. In our region, Zagreb has been chosen the safest (6th place), while the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, won the 7th position. Meanwhile, Naples, Birmingham, Coventry, Marseille, and Bradford finished at the end of the list.
Hungary is among the 50 best destinations for women travelling alone
TUI compiled its list of the top 50 best destinations for women travelling alone based on ten factors. These include gender gap, safety, prices, English knowledge and the number of tourist hotspots, turizmus.com wrote. For example, considering only the prices, Nepal is the best choice for women because the average restaurant bill is below EUR 2.
On the top of TUI’s final list are Germany, Spain and Portugal. In our region, Croatia is 7th, Austria is 9th, Czechia is 10th, Poland is 12th, Bulgaria is 18th, Serbia is 21st, and even Slovakia precedes Hungary with its 31st position. Hungary is in 33rd place, preceding Australia (and Nepal), and following South Africa.

The Real Person!
The Real Person!
I would say that the safety of Hungary is important just as much to those of us who live here as it is to tourists! Just a shame that there are still establishments in Budapest who think it’s ok to rip off tourists. That’s soooo 1990s. I wonder if they also offer to exchange currency, giving toilet paper in exchange, to complete the “Budapest Retro” experience.
