Hungary, Poland ban important Ukrainian products – this will be painful for Kyiv
Hungary is banning imports of Ukrainian grain, oilseed and other farm products until June 30 to allow time for a “rethink” of European Union measures that have resulted in a glut on local markets, Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy said late on Saturday.
The ban is similar to one introduced by Poland, Nagy said. Exemptions for Ukrainian farm products from customs duties and quotas have flooded neighbouring countries with cheap grain and oilseed, as well as large volumes of poultry, eggs and honey, making it “impossible” for farmers in Hungary and other Central European countries to sell their products, he said.
Farm sector players expect the European Union to ensure fair market conditions, he added according to the MTI. The Hungarian government stands by Hungarian farmers and will protect Hungarian agriculture, he said.
István Nagy shared a post today that he conducted an extraordinary video meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart to explain the reasons why Hungary would restrict Ukrainian grain import.
In the meantime the Netherlands is supporting the Ukraine’s farmers with 100 million euros. I just wonder how much of that money will disappear in the pockets of the leading clique in Kiev.
So, Orban doesn’t want lower prices, he wants to keep the prices high. Milking the public!
If Hungarian farmers can’t compete in a free market then they should look for another job.
The Dutch are notoriously stingy – so any money they fork over will likely be closely monitored… And there’s the watchful eye of the European Union who have been quite vocal regarding the tackling of corruption by Ukraine. How is our Integrity Authority and the Anti-Corruption Task Force’s report coming along, by the way? Wasn’t it due in March?
Regarding “cheap” Ukrainian farm products … I thought that prices of grain (thus bread), oil, eggs, etc. had all risen exponentially due to the war, since Ukraine was the biggest worldwide supplier.
So, now Ukraine has resumed exporting again, it’s all too cheap??? I’m lost. Anyone?
