Hungary’s Public Prosecutor, Gábor Bálint Nagy, submitted his resignation on Wednesday, according to a statement published on the Prosecutor General’s Office website.
‘The prosecution service must not become a political tool’
In a statement also sent to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI), Nagy said safeguarding the independence and authority of the justice system, including the prosecution service, is one of the cornerstones of a democratic institutional framework.
He stressed that the prosecution service “must not become an instrument in the struggles of political actors” and should not serve as an arena for day-to-day political interests or power battles.
“To make this unequivocally clear, today I submitted my resignation through the acting President of the Republic in a declaration addressed to the Deputy Speaker exercising the powers of the Speaker of the National Assembly, initiating the termination of my mandate with effect from 25 August 2026,” Nagy said.
His resignation is set to take effect on 25 August 2026, subject to the relevant constitutional procedures.

This guy left Fidesz criminals untouchable. I didn’t even realize that the public prosecutor had not yet been replaced. August 25th is too long to wait for him to go. It just delays prosecution of criminals for more than another month.
To the extent that there was a tremendous electoral mandate, one hopes that Hungary can also attempt to consider the contexts of such scales of change and what the outcomes have been in doing so immediately as opposed to over longer time periods. 1848-1867-192* comes to mind, 194*, 1956, 1989-1991, 2009, and now apparently now. Hopefully purges and revenge, even if somewhat obviously not the same type or scale as in yesteryear, are something to consider avoiding in the context of transparency and other aspects of some kinds of governance.
Magyars raging anger at Orban and his criminality together with Magyars overwhelming public support, mandate to wipe out Orbans crime syndicate ,return billions of € to the public purse is always going to stand accused of retaliation.
Magyar has to be super scrupulous and open.
