Hungary stands by One China principle
Hungarian foreign policy is consistently committed to the One China principle, Tamás Menczer, a state secretary of the foreign ministry, said on Facebook on Tuesday.
“We sincerely hope that the situation in Taiwan will not escalate and world powers will return to cooperation based on mutual respect and trust as soon as possible,” Menczer said.

In the past months, Hungarian foreign policy has focused on peace as the only solution to the suffering and economic troubles caused by the war in a neighbouring country, he said.
At the same time, Hungary’s government finds security crises cropping up elsewhere in the world worrying, Menczer said.
“In the present situation, the last thing we need is a conflict between two world powers, even if that conflict is far away from us,” he said.
The One China principle sees the People’s Republic of China as an undivided entity, with Taiwan as part of the country rather than an independent Republic of China.

We Love China!
To remind everyone: in April 2021, Hungary blocked an EU (European Union) statement condemning China for its authoritarian Hong Kong security law, shielding the Chinese regime from criticism.
Also – there’s the little matter of the Politicians committing us (tax payers) to fund China’s One Belt, One Road driven Budapest-Belgrade freight railway project @ USD 2.1 billion with a Chinese 20-year, USD 1.855 billion loan carrying an annual interest rate of 2.5% (plus foreign exchange exposure…). Thoughtfully, our Government has decided to to classify all data included in these contracts for 10 years (although it is clear Lőrinc Mészáros’ Opus Global will be intimately involved).
@Norbert – you forgot to mention the Fudan University campus in Budapest. Wasn’t that an US$ 1.8 billion investment requiring us to commit to another Chinese loan to the tune of US$1.5 billion US? @DNH – any word where this project stands?
