Iconic Hungarian hotel reopens after devastating fire followed by extensive renovations

Hotel Silvanus, a landmark of Hungarian hospitality located in the picturesque Danube Bend, officially reopened its doors on 1 April, after more than a year of closure following a major fire incident. The reopening marks a significant milestone for the hotel, which has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades during its enforced hiatus.
A devastating fire and its aftermath
As we wrote before, the fire broke out in March 2024 due to an electrical fault on the fourth floor of the hotel. At the time, Hotel Silvanus was hosting an international conference with 143 out of its 151 rooms occupied. Despite the severity of the incident, which caused damages worth HUF billions, no injuries were reported among the 230 guests thanks to swift evacuation measures. Over 100 firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze using 14 jets of water.
The fire significantly damaged the hotel’s mechanical and electrical systems, complicating the restoration process. However, the management used this challenging period as an opportunity not only to repair the damage but also to implement long-planned upgrades to enhance guest experiences.
Renovation and new attractions
During its closure, Hotel Silvanus underwent simultaneous renovation and development. According to Turizmus.com, the hotel now boasts expanded wellness facilities, including a new outdoor pool that offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the Danube Bend. This innovative pool design integrates seamlessly into the hillside, making it a unique attraction in Europe. The interior wellness area has also been upgraded, with features such as a new sauna introducing steam-based “banja” experiences and a revamped indoor Jacuzzi.
The renovations have doubled the hotel’s exterior spa facilities and increased capacity for wellness guests by 40%. Additionally, plans are underway to expand its popular “Sunday Brunch” program, which has been a staple offering for over a decade.
A legacy of excellence
Since its opening in 1971, Hotel Silvanus has been a beloved destination for visitors to Visegrád and beyond. Recognised as Hungary’s first “Green Hotel” and awarded “Hotel of the Year” in 2018, it has consistently improved its services while playing a vital role in local employment. The hotel supports over 100 employees directly and contributes significantly to tourism-related businesses in the region.
With its reopening, Hotel Silvanus is set to reclaim its position as one of Hungary’s premier destinations. Guests can look forward to enjoying both its rich history and modern amenities while taking in breathtaking views of the Danube Bend.
