Invaded but ‘chose war’? Orbán criticises Zelensky on Kyiv visit anniversary

Marking the first anniversary of his visit to Kyiv, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday, “It is never too late for peace.”

The prime minister said that on this day last year, he had “long talks concerning opportunities for a ceasefire and peace” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “I warned him that time was not on his side. I warned him that Russia was prepared for a long war and the US was in for a great change, while Europe was on the verge of exhaustion,” Orbán said in his post.

Orbán: “Zelensky did not listen”

“Zelensky did not listen. With the self-assurance of a man of theatre, he argued for continuing the war,” Orbán said. “The war is still going on, Europe is exhausted, and weapons shipments from the US are waning. Ukrainians have been going through the monstrosities of the war every day. This is no drama or film. This is hard-and-fast reality,” the prime minister said.

“Hungary has stayed on the side of peace, and it is still not too late for President Zelensky to join,” Orbán said.

It has been 1225 days since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine back on 24 February 2022.
