Unexpected turn: Irish man who allegedly killed American woman in Budapest can be released on bail

Change language:
According to the Irish man, the woman consented to the BDSM sex that ultimately led to her death. He claims he panicked and tried to hide the body by burrying it. Now, he wants out of jail, and his family is offering money to make it happen. Moreover, they already bought him an apartment in the Hungarian capital.
Irish man sticks to his story, seeks release
Kenzie Michalski, a 32-year-old American tourist, had visited Budapest several times before. On her latest trip, after her friend caught a flight home, she returned to the city centre and met a 37-year-old Irish man at a bar. The pair, both on vacation, drank together and later went to the man’s accommodations, where they became intimate, according to the man’s account. Michalski’s parents believe the man raped and murdered her, but he claims they engaged in consensual BDSM sex at her request, which tragically led to her death.

The crime, which shocked the country last November, appears to be taking more unexpected turns. Although early reports suggested the autopsy would provide crucial answers (and the suspect’s attorney, Dr. György Magyar, expressed hope for that), there has been no public update on the findings.

The 37-year-old Irish man has remained in custody since the incident. Prosecutors are now seeking to extend his pre-trial detention by another three months. Meanwhile, his parents maintain that their son did nothing wrong and are trying to secure his release. They have bought him an apartment in Budapest, pledged to cover his living expenses, and offered HUF 20 million (roughly USD 55,000) in bail money, asking the court to release him into home detention. According to Blikk, the court has yet to make a decision on the request.
