Budapest, January 27 (MTI) – Radical nationalist Jobbik proposes reinstating a stand-alone border guard in an effort to help monitor illegal immigration, a lawmaker of the party said on Tuesday.

Hungarian police units have not been able to complete their border control duties on their own and have needed the support of civil guards from time to time, Adam Mirkoczki, also a spokesman for the party, told a press conference.

Jobbik proposes setting up a separate border control force with a staff of 2,500 to enable more efficient checks mostly along the border with Serbia and Ukraine, he said.

Jobbik also insists on keeping refugee camps sealed, accelerating the asylum procedure and allowing — in contravention of EU rules — the option of turning away economic migrants at the border, he said.
