Jobbik Would Compensate Farmers Hit by Russian Embargo
(MTI) – The radical nationalist Jobbik party will initiate an amendment to compensate Hungarian farmers from domestic funds as the party blames the Agriculture Ministry for the sector’s missing out on European Union funding related to the Russian food import embargo.
Jobbik MP Zoltan Magyar said at a press conference on Sunday that his party would provide about 3 billion forints primarily to farmers producing autumn fruits including apple growers.
He said they failed to obtain the funding from Brussels because the ministry “forgot to send an e-mail”. The opposition MP therefore called on minister Sandor Fazekas to resign, adding that his party will hold demonstrations next week in the counties concerned.
Earlier, it was the Socialist Party that called on the minister to resign because they believe the ministry was late in calling the tender for the funding offered by the European Commission to help farmers affected by Russia’s embargo.
