Kidnapped as a baby and hidden for over a decade, a girl taken from Italy to Hungary has finally been found, ending a 13-year search filled with heartbreak, hope, and an international manhunt.
Girl kidnapped as a baby
Szeretlek Magyarország writes that a girl who was kidnapped as a baby and taken from Italy to Hungary by her mother has been found after 13 years. The child, now 13, vanished without a trace when her mother, Klaudia, took her from Italy to Mezőtúr, Hungary, at just 14 months old. Since then, her father, Andrea Tonello, has relentlessly searched for her. He raised the alarm and pursued legal action, but his efforts were initially unsuccessful, leaving him heartbroken and uncertain of his daughter’s fate.
Joint investigation
The case gained momentum in 2018 when a joint Hungarian-Italian investigative team was formed to locate the missing child. The collaborative effort, led by the Italian police and the Venice Public Prosecutor’s Office, culminated in the arrest of the mother. According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Klaudia was taken into custody in Mezőtúr, where the girl was eventually found. The breakthrough followed years of Andrea’s advocacy, which included petitions, appeals to Interpol, and even a request for help from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
