Janos Czetz (1822-1904) participated in Hungary’s 1848-1849 war of independence against Habsburg rule as provisional commander-in-chief, then chief of staff of the Transylvanian army. Following the failure of the freedom fight, he emigrated to western Europe and, in 1860, to Argentina. Working as military engineer, he became director of the National Military School in 1870.
Paying an official visit to Argentina, Kover was greeted with military honours at the academy. The house speaker donated a Hungarian national flag to the institution and expressed thanks to it for fostering the general’s memory.
In his speech, Kover said that Czetz symbolised all the contributions the local Hungarian community had made to Argentina’s prosperity.
